2017 Prius v

Green Machine

Do you love the frugal fuel economy of the Prius hatchback but require a larger backseat and more cargo-hauling capability? Then you really need to check out the 2017 Prius v.

The Prius v (the "v" stands for “Versatility”) is a five-passenger compact hybrid wagon. It provides all the generous fuel economy you’ve come to expect from the Prius, but boasts more space and utility than its smaller sibling.

Performance

Powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, the 2017 Prius v delivers a smooth and enjoyable ride. The engine is mated to two electric motors and a battery pack, with power sent to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

It may not be the fastest or most powerful horse out of the gate, but what the Prius v lacks in muscle, it more than makes up for in miles per gallon. In fact, its intelligent design and advanced hybrid engine earned it an EPA-estimated 41 mpg (43 city/39 highway) rating, which should have you smiling each and every time you pass the pump.*

The Prius v is also one of the most easy-to-live-with cars around. Sure, you won’t fulfill your childhood dreams of winning the Indy 500 with it, but its long wheelbase does provide pleasant driving mechanics and makes trips near or far a welcome experience. Of course, the stellar gas mileage doesn’t hurt either.

Features

The 2017 Prius v is a fuel-sipping hybrid wagon combo that comes in four trim levels: Two, Three, Four, and Five. Pricing starts at $26,675. **

The Prius v may be big on efficiency, but it also provides plenty of fun for drivers and passengers, thanks to its long list of standard features. Highlights include heated mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, a rearview camera, automatic climate control, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat that slides and reclines.

Inside, the Two comes with Entune™ Audio. This suite of features includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen display that provides easy access to various media functions. The system also supports hands-free phone capability, phone book access, and music streaming via Bluetooth®, along with a USB port, six-speaker audio system, CD player, and Siri® Eyes Free.

The Three adds extra goodies, including power lumbar support to the driver seat, a fold-down rear center armrest, a multi-information display, and a navigation system. The Three also adds smartphone app integration via the Entune™ App Suite, which provides easy access to popular apps such as iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable®, Pandora®, Facebook Places, Yelp®, and much more.

The Four adds to the Prius v’s long list of goods with leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, an eight-way power driver seat, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Last but certainly not least, the Five brings its own laundry list of attractive upgrades, including 17-inch alloy wheels and automatic LED headlights. The Five can also be equipped with the Advanced Technology package, which includes popular features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlight control, and a pre-collision safety system. Also included is Toyota’s Safety Connect® system.

Design

If you’re at all familiar with the Prius line, you’ll immediately recognize the Prius v. It’s the largest member of the family and retains its familiar ties by virtue of its long roofline and sharply cut-off rear, both of which contribute to the hybrid’s generous cargo and passenger space and also enhance aerodynamic efficiency.

Step inside, and the Prius v’s cabin is exceptionally roomy, warm, and inviting. It’s also incredibly versatile with room for five people, lots of cargo, or a combination of both.

Fitting whatever you need to store is easy, too. The rear seat can slide fore and aft and the back seats fold flat in 60/40 split, so fitting boxes, groceries, or whatever awkward items life throws at you is a breeze. There are also storage spots for smaller items tucked throughout the cabin, making it easy to store phones or other personal items. In short, the Prius v’s engine isn’t the only thing that’s intelligently designed.

Safety

The Prius v isn’t just concerned with getting you to your destination as efficiently as possible, it’s also dedicated to getting you where you’re going as safely as possible, too.

Every model comes standard with anti-lock disc brakes, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, a driver knee airbag, a rearview camera, and stability and traction control.

An optional Advanced Technology package is also available. It adds a pre-collision system, which prepares the cabin if a crash is deemed unavoidable by tightening the seatbelts and initiating braking. The package also includes Toyota’s Safety Connect® telematics systems, which provides various emergency assistance and a stolen vehicle locator.

Verdict

The 2017 Prius v is a comfortable and enjoyable way to reach your destination. And when you get there, you should have plenty of cash leftover thanks to the Prius v’s excellent fuel economy.
